If you're a new guest at Camp Allen, you may have heard of the German Chocolate Cake. I'm sorry. There needs to be emphasis on the word "the." Allow me to restart. If you're a new guest at Camp Allen, you may have heard of THE German Chocolate Cake. It is a favorite recipe around camp, so much so that if you're here on a Friday night, chances are you'll get to indulge in the rich, chocolatey goodness. The secret however is not in the cake mix. For that you can pick up a box of your favorite devil's food cake mix. How delightfully simple is that? The secret to this recipe becoming a camp wide favorite is the frosting: home-made and heavenly. It's easy too. Once acquiring the ingredients (which chances are you may already have them in your pantry), you're only a few steps away from German Chocolate frosting bliss. Here's what you'll need: 1 cup evaporated milk 1 cup white sugar 3 egg yolks 1/2 cup butter (unsalted) 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 3/4 cup coconut 1 cup chopped pecans With a standing or hand mixer, mix together the evaporated milk, sugar, egg yolks, butter (melt first) and vanilla until smooth. Once mixed, move ingredients to a sauce pan and simmer on medium heat. Stir constantly until the mixture is thick, about 12 minutes. To finish, remove the frosting from heat and add the coconut and pecans. Let cool to room temperature, then pour over your baked cake and smooth out with a spatula. Now Everyone's Favorite German Chocolate Cake can be your favorite German Chocolate Cake. It'll go quick, so grab it while you can!
