We were honored to host Ride 2 Recovery a few weeks back and see how they care for veterans in the way of healing, renewal, and fun. Thank you for all you do and for coming to Camp Allen, Ride 2 Recovery! This past week, June 13th through 17th, Camp Allen hosted Ride 2 Recovery’s Women’s Initiative. Ride 2 Recovery is a groundbreaking veterans assistance program which began in 2008. Founded on utilizing cycling as therapy, R2R’s mission is to restore hope and purpose in the lives of wounded veterans and service members. The Women’s Initiative was an exclusive offering for female veterans which combined daily rides with afternoon and evening therapeutic sessions. Content for these sessions was provided by Project Rebirth, a resilience resource for all who serve community and country. Both Ride 2 Recovery and Project Rebirth operate as not- for-profit entities and rely heavily on sponsorship dollars and donations to fund their activities each year. The 2016 Women’s Initiative included 18 participants from Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Colorado, Florida, and California along with staff from both R2R and Project Rebirth. Women’s Initiative Director, Jen Goodbody explains, “Our organization Ride 2 Recovery uses cycling as a rehabilitation tool for injured, ill and wounded veterans. Camp Allen was a great venue to host our Women's Initiative. It provided a great atmosphere for our participants to create a healing community.” After her experience, Army Veteran participant April Lage described her week: "I make my own reality! ... Camp Allen & Ride 2 Recovery's Women’s Initiative was a dire step and part of the beginning of my personal journey of dealing, healing, recovery, support, connecting and continuing with one foot in front of the other. It was way out of my comfort zone and I am SO happy I pushed myself and did it!” Written by Byron Prestridge, Ride 2 Recovery 's Project Hero Central Region Program Manager For more information about Ride 2 Recovery, you can find them at www.ride2recovery.com and Project Rebirth at www.projectrebirth.org. |
