behind the scenes:Camp allen staff profile

10/4/2016

If you have come to Camp Allen for a retreat or program and ever enjoyed lake activities, the Adventure Summit, a trail ride, or any of the other great activities Camp Allen offers, chances are you got to enjoy that activity because of Becky Heath! Becky is the Program Manager at Camp Allen, and she does an incredible job scheduling and planning many activities and programs here at camp. It's been a while since we posted a CA staff profile, so we thought we would introduce you to our Program Manager.

Please enjoy this interview with the one and only, the lovely, Becky Heath:

What is your home town, where did you go to school and what did you study?
  • My hometown is Rochester, New York. I went to college at Unity College in Maine and got my Bachelors in Marine Biology. In my previous job, I worked at a summer camp on the coast and I got to teach marine ecology there, as well as being a counselor.

How did you get to Camp Allen?
  • It was a fluke thing! After I graduated college, I knew I wanted to go into outdoor education. So I applied all over the country and I happened to email my resume to Candy, Director of Outdoor Education, and she emailed me the next day. So from there I interview and ended up accepting the job at Camp Allen working as a Discovery instructor, which I loved. I still enjoy those moments when I get to go out and teach. You meet so many different people from different walks of life, and kids are always just so happy to be here. It’s something different every day. And then after 3 years in Discovery, I was ready for something different. When this job came available I knew it would be a great fit.

What is your role as Program Manager?
  • As Program Manager, I coordinate any activities that do not fall under the realm of Summer Camp or Discovery. I coordinate that in between space, essentially all the activities for our Conference Center guests. I am also responsible for creating, managing, and planning all of the Camp Allen sponsored events like Labor Day Family Camp, Endurance, Gramps Camp, etc. In 2016, Camp Allen had over 19 different sponsored programs that I helped plan.

What is the favorite part about being Program Manager for Camp Allen?
  • Similar to my job with Discovery, it’s something different every week. I get to meet some really amazing people between planning activities for Camp Allen programs like Birds and Blooms, to acting as a liaison when we host groups like Joni and Friends or Ride 2 Recovery. I just love meeting people who do really awesome things with their lives, yet also choose to come to Camp Allen and relax with their families.

What is something you’re passionate about?
  • I’m from a background of ecology and marine biology, so I’m really passionate about bringing people to enjoy, appreciate, and understand the outdoors as much as I do. It’s something I hope to achieve here at Camp Allen and wherever life takes me.

What are three of your favorite hobbies?
  •  I love reading and knitting and camping/hiking. On one hand I’m an extreme homebody and on the other I crave adventure and the great outdoors.
