Organic Gardening
This class utilizes sustainable agricultural ideas in the Discovery organic garden, where students have opportunities to observe the composting process, and to plant, maintain, and/or harvest products, thereby fostering an understanding of what is involved in the production of food before it reaches their dinner table. Rain water collection and composting are also covered, and students have the opportunity to compost their own food scraps from meals.
Conservation & Sustainable Resources
In Conservation studies, students may participate in a range of activities relative to their age group and size, from mock environmental debates to pitching inventions that provide a solution to potential environmental issues. The goal is to give students an opportunity to develop their own personal values concerning the conservation of our resources. Students will tour our organic garden and learn about our use of solar power, rain water collection and composting to make a functioning garden. Additionally, students experience the basics of the 3 R's: Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle.
Forest Ecology
The Discovery Instructor leads students through an assortment of experiential activities in the forest. A primary goal it to facilitate the development of understanding and respect for the diversity of the forest and its importance in our lives. Interdependence, animal and plant adaptations, habitat, life cycles, food webs/chains and conservation issues are all covered.
